Architect's Guide to Media Facade Integration
Successful media facades are designed as part of the architecture from the beginning. The display layer should support the building's form, daylight, structure and long-term operation rather than simply cover the facade with a screen.
1. Start during design development
Structural provisions, cable routes, equipment rooms, controller locations and maintenance access are easier to coordinate before facade construction is complete.
2. Protect the daytime architecture
A transparent media layer should reinforce the building's proportions and facade rhythm. Review the building with the LEDs switched off: fixture visibility, support wires, secondary steelwork and cable routes are all part of the daytime design.
3. Treat transparency as a building parameter
Transparency affects daylight, outward views, visual bulk and wind behavior. An open-grid media facade can reduce obstruction compared with an opaque cabinet display, but the final structure still requires project-specific engineering.
4. Review structure and wind early
Dead load
Evaluate the complete system: LED mesh, cables, wire ropes, brackets, control boxes and secondary structure.
Wind exposure
Open mesh allows air to pass through the system, but building height, local wind conditions and structural anchoring still need formal review.
5. Choose pitch by viewing distance
Smaller pitch is not automatically better. If the public sees the facade from tens or hundreds of meters away, unnecessary pixel density increases cost, power and maintenance without creating meaningful visual improvement.

6. Coordinate MEP and control infrastructure
Power capacity, distribution zones, grounding, network paths, data cabinets and controller access should be part of the electrical and low-voltage design package—not added after the facade is complete.
7. Design maintenance access
Every project should answer a simple question before production: how will a technician replace a failed module, cable, power supply or controller after the building is occupied?
